Crushpad Ferments A Winemaking Revolution
Citizen Winemakers' Gain Access To Top Vineyards To Make Their Dream Wines A Reality
San Fransisco, — February 9, 2006 — A winemaking revolution has started on the West Coast as more than 200 customers of Crushpad can now pour a glass of wine perfectly matched to their palate because they were able to work with Crushpad to choose a vineyard and make their own wine no matter where they live. Crushpad is opening up 2006 grape source allocations this month so that even more wine aficionados can sign up to become "citizen winemakers." The winery is also readying MyCrushpad 2.0, its online "virtual winemaking" site that enables customers from around the world to participate in the process without physically being at the winery.
"Entering our third year, Crushpad is bringing more people into the winemaking experience than ever before," said Michael Brill, Crushpad founder and CEO. "Now anyone can enter a world that was formerly restricted by barriers such as geography, lack of wine industry connections and financial constraints."
In preparation for harvest 2006, Crushpad has already established relationships with nearly 30 of California's top vineyards, a 50 percent increase over last year. Several new Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards as well as cool climate Pinot Noir sources ranging from California's Central Coast to Oregon have been added. "As Crushpad grows, our relationships with ultra-premium winegrape growers are strengthened," added Brill. "We've connected wine consumers with grape growers, a rarity in the wine business." In return, many of the growers are now seeing vineyard designated wines made at Crushpad from their grapes.
Crushpad's customers are savvy wine lovers that don't have to wait years to obtain a miniscule quantity of a super-premium, rare cult wine. At Crushpad, the customers are the actual winemakers sourcing the same high-quality vineyards and using the same state-of-the-art winemaking technology and equipment as professional winemakers. Crushpad's customers choose their level of participation, can be involved on site or remotely from anywhere via www.mycrushpad.com and participate in key winemaking decisions from vineyard observation and fruit processing to fermentation, aging and bottling, relying on the winery's in-house winemaking expertise as needed.
Many of Crushpad's customers are "going pro" by building small- to medium-sized commercial wine brands and using Crushpad to get into the wine business. David Dain Smith of Missouri has been a Crushpad customer since 2004 and in 2005 launched Dain Wines with four bottlings of Pinot Noir and one bottling of Syrah, all made at Crushpad.
"We love the Crushpad experience," said Smith. "It provides great flexibility and allows us to make wine while living in Missouri. Crushpad's cellar staff, relationships with grape growers, consulting winemakers and built-in Crushpad Commerce are invaluable tools for developing our wine business."
Crushpad "citizen winemakers" typically work through these key steps to make their wine:
- Winemaking Plan: Customers meet with an in-house winemaker -- in person or on the phone -- to create a winemaking plan that guides the final product, including vineyard sources, winemaking and aging regimens.
- Blending: During aging, there is the option to blend other varietals into the wine. Winemakers conduct blending trials with customers to create the final blend.
- Aging: The wine is stored and tasted while it ages -- a process that takes anywhere from nine months to two years depending on varietal.
- Package Design: Winemakers can create their own package for their wine from label concept to bottle, cork and foil capsule decisions. Crushpad navigates the complex government approval process and prints labels while their in-house designer assists with design.
- Bottling: Many winemakers plan to be at Crushpad when their wine is bottled. Once the wine is finished, it is picked up, shipped or stored by Crushpad.
"When we started Crushpad, we wanted to support anyone -- regardless of where they lived -- and give them the means to create their own wine," said Michael Brill. "Today Crushpad has winemaking customers in more than 30 states as well as four countries and we continue to work hard to make winemaking accessible for anyone passionate about wine."
