About Sondra Barrett

Sondra Barrett, PhD fell in love with food early on when she starting reading cook books as a young girl. She hasn’t stopped since. She earned a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Illinois Medical School saying that chemistry was just like cooking. Teaching nutrition, biochemistry, or bodymind medicine, mentoring school garden programs and developing a discussion guide for Edible, a short film on eating, Dr. Barrett has delivered sensory programs for health and healing, wine and learning. While on the faculty of University of California Medical School (UCSF) she worked with families and children with cancer while researching healing and cell biology. Her hobby photographing food, vitamins and minerals through the microscope gained her an artist-in-residence opportunity at Sterling Vineyards where she discovered her passion for wine. Her unique award-winning wine portrait photography and interactive presentations are offered to wineries, museums, and a variety of venues including Lawrence Hall of Science, Napa Valley Museum, Copia, the Rudd Estate and American Wine Expo. Her first book “Wine’s Hidden Beauty” was released December 2009. Dr. Barrett has been a harvest intern at a small Russian River winery, taught at a major medical school, explores the inner world of wine, and loves to cook and share meals.
